Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran made an obscene gesture toward a fan after grounding out in the fifth inning against the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.

The Red Sox trailed 5-0 when Duran gave the middle finger to someone on the first-base side as he jogged back to Boston's dugout. Following the game, Duran explained that he made the gesture in response to a fan who told him to kill himself.

"Yeah, somebody just told me to kill myself," he said, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. "I'm used to it at this point. Shit happens. I'm gonna flip somebody off if they say something to me, but it is what it is. I shouldn't react like that. That kind of stuff is still kind of triggering. It happens."

This isn't Duran's first incident involving a spectator. In April 2024, he exchanged words with a Cleveland Guardians fan who made an inappropriate comment referencing Duran's disclosure of a suicide attempt, which he shared in a documentary about the Red Sox.

"Honestly, it's my fault for talking about my mental health," Duran said. "I kind of brought in the haters. So just something I've got to get used to."

MLB also suspended the 29-year-old for two games after he directed a homophobic slur at a fan during a game between the Red Sox and Houston Astros in 2024.

After Tuesday's game, Duran admitted that he should have handled the situation at Target Field differently.

"I didn't really tell anybody (on the team), so that's on me. Just trying to hold it in, not really bring that up to the team," he said. "I mean, we're trying to win a game. I shouldn't even bring that up to anybody. It's not really something where I want to be like, bro, you should have heard what this guy said to me. That's not the most important thing. The most important thing is winning the game, and it just happens."
