Toronto Blue Jays catcher Alejandro Kirk will undergo left thumb surgery, manager John Schneider announced Monday, according to The Athletic's Mitch Bannon.

Kirk's recovery timeline will be known once he undergoes the operation Tuesday, Bannon adds.

The 27-year-old exited Friday's loss to the Chicago White Sox after taking a foul tip off his catching hand.

The two-time All-Star was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday, while catcher Brandon Valenzuela was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo.

Kirk met with hand specialist Thomas Graham in Pennsylvania on Monday, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.

Kirk went 3-for-20 to start the season and hit one homer.

Backup catcher Tyler Heineman has since stepped in behind the plate. The 34-year-old veteran is 4-for-10 this season.
