Report: Red Sox interested in signing Bichette
The Boston Red Sox could be preparing to make a run at luring free-agent shortstop Bo Bichette away from the AL East rival Toronto Blue Jays.
The Red Sox have shown interest in Bichette in the club's attempt to snag a prominent middle-of-the-order bat on the open market, sources told WEEI's Rob Bradford.
Boston has also been connected to third baseman Alex Bregman, who played with the team in 2025 before opting out of his contract, and first baseman Pete Alonso.
Shortstop Trevor Story will return in 2026 after opting into the final two guaranteed years of his pact. However, Bichette could play second base like he did for the Blue Jays in the World Series after a knee sprain limited his mobility in the field. Multiple teams are reportedly interested in the two-time All-Star as a shortstop, second baseman, or third baseman.
Bichette went deep 18 times with a career-high 44 doubles, 94 RBIs, and an .840 OPS during the regular season before slashing .348/.444/.478 with one homer and six RBIs in the Fall Classic. The 27-year-old was one of the worst defensive shortstops in baseball in 2025, finishing last in the majors for outs above average over 130 starts.
Yet, potential suitors haven't been scared off of Bichette at short, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers are two clubs with glaring holes at the position.
The Blue Jays and Bichette both publicly expressed a desire to reunite. Toronto attached a qualifying offer to Bichette, but he's expected to reject the one-year, $22.025-million contract for 2026.
