Max Scherzer, 41, allowed two earned runs on three hits with four walks and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to record the win in his first playoff start in two years.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider came out to talk with the three-time Cy Young winner and future Hall of Famer in the fifth inning with a runner on first and two outs, but the pitcher wanted no part of the conversation. He ended up striking out Randy Arozarena to end the frame.
"I knew the situation in the game, I wanted the ball, and I basically told him that in a little bit different language," Scherzer joked postgame with MLB on Fox.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Andrés Giménez went deep for a second straight game to pace the offense. The latter also had four RBIs.
"That's Max," Guerrero told Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports. "Hall of Fame. He competes all the time. He came and he give all the energy. He gave it all on the field."
Guerrero hit his fifth homer of the playoffs in the seventh to set a Blue Jays record for most long balls during a single postseason, passing team legend José Bautista.
