New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman still views Anthony Volpe as the club's starting shortstop beyond 2025 despite the 24-year-old's struggles this season.
"Yeah, I think he's a good player. Obviously, this year notwithstanding, he's got a lot of abilities that are positive," Cashman said, according to Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
"He's had a tough stretch, but yeah, he's someone that we can count on and we believe in."
Cashman added: "But acknowledging at the same time, this isn't the season that we expected or he expected, but that doesn't change our viewpoint of what he's capable of. I think he's a really talented guy, and I think he has a chance to be a positive impact on us."
Volpe owns a .206/.268/.393 slash line with 19 home runs, 70 RBIs, and 16 steals this campaign. His 0.6 fWAR and one defensive run saved are the lowest of his three-year career, and his 81 wRC+ ranks 140th out of 146 qualified hitters, according to FanGraphs.

Volpe has been playing through a partially torn labrum since May. He's unlikely to start any games during this weekend's series against the Boston Red Sox while recovering from a cortisone shot in his shoulder, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told Phillips.
