Cora: Devers won't play 3B on Bregman's off days
It appears Rafael Devers' future with the Boston Red Sox is at designated hitter.
Devers won't play third base when Alex Bregman needs a day off, announced manager Alex Cora, who added Romy Gonzalez will get reps at third instead.
"He's the DH of the Boston Red Sox," Cora said of Devers on Friday, according to the Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo.
Devers' role with the club was up in the air after Bregman signed in February. Devers immediately rejected the idea of becoming a full-time DH before changing his stance after discussions with Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow.
The 28-year-old Devers is one of Boston's best hitters, but he has also been one of baseball's worst defensive third basemen since debuting in 2017, recording minus-62 defensive runs saved at the hot corner.
