Scherzer: I need to talk with Mets' front office after Robertson trade

New York Mets right-hander Max Scherzer is seeking answers about his future and that of the club after closer David Robertson was dealt to the Miami Marlins on Thursday.

"I've probably got to have a conversation with the front office," Scherzer said Friday, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. "You traded our closer away. I'm sure a bunch of people are going to have conversations with the front office."

Scherzer, who has a no-trade clause, added that the Aug. 1 trade deadline is different for him compared to when he was moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers in July 2021.

"You've got to understand what everybody's going to do," Scherzer said. "This isn't like the trade for me out of Washington. When I was in Washington, I was about to be a free agent. ... I'm not going to be a free agent (now). I have another year here."

Scherzer acknowledged he wasn't happy to see Robertson traded.

"Disappointed, obviously," the three-time Cy Young winner said. "We put ourselves in this position. We haven't played well as a team. I've had a hand in that for why we're in the position that we're at. Can't get mad at anybody but yourself, but it stinks."

The 39-year-old is putting together one of the worst seasons of his 16-year career. The eight-time All-Star owns a 4.01 ERA with 4.73 FIP while allowing an NL-high 23 homers over 107 2/3 innings (19 starts) in 2023. He still owed over $43.3 million next season after inking a three-year, $130-million pact with New York in November 2021.

The Mets trail the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves by 17 games despite owning the highest payroll in baseball. New York is also 6.5 games out of the NL's final wild-card spot.
