Marlins acquire Robertson from Mets
The New York Mets traded veteran closer David Robertson to the Miami Marlins for a pair of prospects in infielder Marco Vargas and catcher Ronald Hernandez, the team announced Friday.
Robertson joined the Mets on a one-year, $10-million contract in the offseason. The Mets won't help pay down any of Robertson's deal, leaving the Marlins on the hook for the remainder of the contract which is approximately $3.5 million, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.
The 38-year-old was elevated into the closer's role after Edwin Diaz suffered a knee injury. Robertson has excelled, posting a 4-2 record with 14 saves and a 2.05 ERA in 44 innings this season.
He could immediately take over the ninth inning for the Marlins, as current closer A.J. Puk has struggled to a 9.82 ERA with three blown saves while allowing four home runs across 7 1/3 innings in July.
Vargas was the Marlins' No. 18 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The 18-year-old hit .283 with a .899 OPS in 33 games for Miami's rookie affiliate.
Hernandez, 19, was Miami's No. 21 prospect. He put together a .298/.464/.452 slash line with three home runs and 25 RBIs for the Marlins' rookie affiliate.
