St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Miles Mikolas and manager Oliver Marmol have been suspended for their actions during Thursday game against the Chicago Cubs.

Mikolas has been banned five games, while Marmol received an automatic one-game suspension, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers. Mikolas is appealing the decision.

The hurler was ejected in the first inning for throwing at Cubs outfielder Ian Happ after Happ accidentally hit Cardinals catcher Willson Contreras in the head on a swing.

Cardinals bench coach Joe McEwing will manage the team in Marmol's absence Friday night, according to Jeff Jones of MLB.com.

Mikolas said postgame that he was surprised there was no warning from the umpires before the ejection.

"I've got Willson's back. He's my catcher. I consider him a really good friend now," Mikolas said, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo. "I guess (intent) was what the umpires thought I was doing. It's unfortunate there was no warning."

Contreras and Happ were teammates with the Cubs from 2017-2022.

"(Happ) is not trying to do anything, like, nobody is trying to have a long swing and hit the catcher," Contreras said. "We're close friends, I gave him a hug. It's part of the game and it's over."
