Swanson exited Cubs' comeback due to exhaustion following wife's injury
Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson pulled himself from his team's comeback win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday due to exhaustion following an injury suffered by his soccer star wife, Mallory Swanson.
"Realistically, I felt like my body was just kind of done," Dansby said, according to The Athletic's Patrick Mooney.
"I felt like doing anything more probably would have put me in harm's way. The night was over for me. Pretty simple, probably haven't eaten or slept, or drank enough water over the past few days. I already started getting a lot of fluids in me and taking care of myself."
The 29-year-old said he had "been up since 4 a.m." to take Mallory to the hospital for surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon in her left knee, an injury she sustained during a U.S. national team contest against Ireland on Saturday.
"She's all right," Dansby said.
"Everybody knows it's a pretty tough and heartbreaking situation. I'm heartbroken for her, just a lot of tears and sadness. Two things can be true at the same time: We can be sad and upset, but we can also understand God's bigger picture and plans. We'll get through it together."
Dansby was 4-for-4 before exiting in the sixth inning with the Cubs up 11-7 after they initially fell behind by seven runs to the Mariners in the second frame. The Cubs first said he departed the game due to cramps.
The Georgia native has been impressive for the Cubs since signing a megadeal in the offseason, hitting .400/.467/.450 with five RBIs in 10 games while playing his usual brand of stellar defense.
