The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Roman Anthony on the 10-day injured list with a right wrist sprain prior to Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Anthony revealed that he's also dealing with a sprained ligament in his right ring finger, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald.

Catcher/infielder Mickey Gasper was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move.

Anthony suffered the injury on a swing during the first inning of Monday's game in Detroit. He left the contest the following inning and subsequently returned to Boston, where he met with a hand specialist.

The 21-year-old hasn't experienced any major setbacks since Monday, leaving he and the team hopeful that he'll return after the minimum 10-day IL stint. Boston decided to make the move now instead of playing one man short through the weekend. Anthony's IL stint is retroactive to Tuesday, making his earliest return date next Friday when the team is in Atlanta.

"Obviously not where I want to be, but just got to keep getting better every day," Anthony said, according to The Associated Press. "The hand is tricky, and I've never dealt with a hand issue before. Getting the news that it's nothing serious is the best news we've could have gotten. When the IL stint is over, I plan to be in that game the next day and off the IL."

Anthony finished third in AL Rookie of the Year voting last season after signing a $130-million extension last summer. He's hitting .229/.354/.321 with one homer, five RBIs, 20 walks, and two steals through his first 30 games in 2026.

Masataka Yoshida could potentially draw into the lineup at either DH or left field while Anthony is sidelined. Yoshida, who's in the fourth season of a five-year, $90-million contract, has made just 69 plate appearances this year due to the Red Sox glut of outfielders.

Gasper, who will take Anthony's spot on the active roster, has put up a .947 OPS with six homers and 27 RBIs in 28 games at Triple-A this year. The 30-year-old New Hampshire native made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2024 and had a cup of coffee with Minnesota last season.
