Jays' Berrios hoping to rebound in 2023: 'I'll just believe in myself'
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios struggled through the worst season of his career in 2022 but is motivated to prove it was just a blip amid a string of consistent success.
"One thing I learned was to never give more credit to a hitter than I have to," Berrios said Saturday, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson. "I'll just believe in myself. I'm Jose Berrios."
Berrios posted the worst ERA among all MLB starters (5.23) last season. The 28-year-old was in the first season of a seven-year, $131-million extension. The Blue Jays acquired Berrios from the Minnesota Twins at the 2021 trade deadline.
He emerged as one of the American League's most dependable starters with the Twins. Berrios made a pair of All-Star appearances and received down-ballot Cy Young votes in 2021.
The hurler owns a career 72-54 record with a 4.24 ERA and 1,006 strikeouts across 1,023 2/3 innings pitched.
