Guardians' Straw received death threats after Yankee Stadium incident

Cleveland Guardians outfielder Myles Straw said he received death threats after he was involved in an incident with fans at Yankee Stadium in April.

"I think realistically, I'm not too worried about (the death threats)," Straw said Monday ahead of his team's first trip back to New York since the April series, according to the New York Post's Mark W. Sanchez. "People say all kinds of stuff all the time. Other teammates, I'm sure everyone's dealt with stuff like that.

"I just try to not look at stuff like that, don't let it bother me."

On April 23, Yankee Stadium fans threw trash at Guardians players, including Straw, after Gleyber Torres delivered a walk-off hit.

Cleveland rookie Steven Kwan had been injured on the previous play. Straw climbed an outfield fence and yelled at Yankees fans as medical staff checked on Kwan, later explaining he'd been upset that fans had cheered when Kwan was hurt and mocked him following the injury.

Postgame, Straw called Yankees fans "brutal" and the "worst fan base on the planet."

The 27-year-old said Monday that he'd probably handle the situation similarly if it happened again, but he complimented the baseball team.

"That whole quote or whatever I said earlier - the Yankees are an amazing franchise," Straw said. "One of the most, if not the most, winning teams of all time. Nothing but respect for that team."

Straw and the Guardians open the American League Division Series against the Yankees in New York on Tuesday.
