Francisco Lindor's future as the starting shortstop of the New York Mets is secure, according to president of baseball operations David Stearns.
"No question," Stearns told reporters Friday when asked if Lindor would be with the club in the same role next season, according to Ben Krimmel of SNY.
Lindor's put together one of the worst campaigns of his career, especially on the defensive end.
"Certainly a few more mistakes than we're accustomed to seeing," Stearns said of Lindor's play at shortstop. "I think a lot of the underlying stuff is still pretty good. And uncharacteristically, he just hasn't completed a lot of some of the plays that he normally completes. I really don't think there's anything more in there than that."
Lindor is hitting .231/.316/.424 with 15 home runs and 36 RBIs in 83 games after receiving MVP votes in each of the last four campaigns.
The two-time Gold Glover and one-time Platinum Glove recipient ranks 31st out of 45 players in outs above average for shortstops with at least 100 chances this season.
Lindor is under contract for five more seasons with an annual average salary of $34.1 million.
