The Chicago Cubs claimed left-hander Wade Miley off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds on Friday, the team announced.

Cincinnati saves itself from potentially having to pay Miley a $1-million buyout by having him claimed on waivers instead of exercising his option and trading him.

The 34-year-old pitched well for the Reds last season, posting a 12-7 record with a 3.37 ERA and 3.97 FIP in 28 starts. The southpaw tossed a no-hitter against Cleveland on May 7.

If the Cubs exercise Miley's option, he'll earn $10 million in 2022 and would join Kyle Hendricks as the most established starters on the staff.

Miley has logged 1,581 innings over 11 big-league seasons split between seven teams.
