New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns doesn't intend to step down from his front-office role with the team following Friday's firing of manager Carlos Mendoza.
Stearns is responsible for overhauling the Mets' roster this past offseason after the club missed the playoffs in 2025. So far, the moves haven't paid off, with New York (34-47) sitting last in the National League East.
"I don't believe that our record on the field this year is indicative of some of the advancements that we've made in the organization," Stearns said at a press conference, per SNY. "But clearly, our record is nowhere good enough."
| NOTABLE SUBTRACTIONS | NOTABLE ADDITIONS |

Stearns surrounded Mendoza not only with a revamped roster, but with an entirely new coaching staff, which he said might've led to continuity issues. Stearns added that he understands Mets fans' frustrations, but hopes they will remain confident in him.
"If I were sitting in the fans' seat, I would share that (skepticism)," Stearns said. "From my perspective, what I can do and what I will do is, for as long as I'm sitting in this seat, work as hard as I can with the people around me to do everything we can to push this organization forward. I think we're going to be able to do that."
Stearns, who was hired as the Mets' president of baseball operations in 2024, said he still has the full support of owner Steve Cohen and has no plans to move into a full-scale rebuild.
"I understand we have an uphill battle ahead of us this year, but we're not turning the page," he said.
