Angels trade Watson back to Giants

The San Francisco Giants acquired left-handed reliever Tony Watson from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for left-hander Sam Selman, and right-handed pitching prospects Ivan Armstrong and Jose Marte, the Angels announced Friday.

Watson pitched for the Giants from 2018 to 2020 before departing as a free agent this past offseason.

The 36-year-old posted a 4.64 ERA and 1.18 WHIP with 25 strikeouts and 14 walks across 36 appearances for the Angels this season. He's been particularly effective against left-handed hitters, limiting them to a .572 OPS.

Selman, who'd been pitching at Triple-A Sacramento, made 41 appearances for the Giants over the past three seasons. The 30-year-old has played in seven big-league games this year.

Marte, 25, sports a 2.79 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 15 walks across 24 combined appearances between High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond.

Armstrong, who turned 21 earlier this week, owns a 1.88 ERA and 0.99 WHIP while averaging 10.1 strikeouts per nine innings at Low-A San Jose.
