Watch: Cubs' Baez mocks Reds' Garrett after walk-off hit
Javier Baez got Amir Garrett, and he made sure to enjoy himself.
The Chicago Cubs shortstop came off the bench to end a tense game with a long pinch-hit, walk-off single off Garrett, the Cincinnati Reds' closer, for a 6-5 victory.
As Baez electrified Wrigley Field, he made sure to let Garrett know who was in charge on this night. Baez took a long time to walk up the baseline, mocking the pitcher and motioning at him with his bat. Garrett took exception and yelled back before eventually being accompanied off the field before the situation escalated.
This flare-up appears to be the continuation of some bad blood between Baez and Garrett. Earlier this year, the two rivals sparked a benches-clearing incident after Garrett taunted the Cubs' dugout.
"Just two highly, highly competitive guys," Reds manager David Bell said of Monday's ending, according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic.
The Cubs and Reds play each other three more times this week at the Friendly Confines.
