Schwarber ties MLB record after 3-HR game vs. Mets

The Washington Nationals' decision to move Kyle Schwarber into the leadoff spot is paying off.

Schwarber belted three home runs against the New York Mets on Sunday to tie an MLB record for the most round-trippers (five) hit during a two-game span, according to MLB.com's Sarah Langs.

The Nationals outfielder got things started early, hitting his first homer off Mets right-hander Taijuan Walker to begin the bottom of the first inning.

The 28-year-old continued to showcase his power in the fifth when he lined an offering from Walker into the right-field bullpen for his 17th home run of the season.

Schwarber's fifth homer in two days, and third of the contest, came in the seventh inning when he smacked a pitch from Jeurys Familia over the left-field fence.

Washington removed Schwarber from Sunday's contest in the eighth inning before he could try for his fourth homer of the game. Manager Dave Martinez said postgame that the outfielder was removed after feeling something in his knee on the third homer, according to Maria Torres of The Athletic.

The Nationals moved the slugger to the leadoff spot on June 8. He's had nine home runs and 17 RBIs since the switch.
