Report: Cespedes holding showcase for MLB clubs on March 2
Yoenis Cespedes isn't ready to call it quits.
The free-agent outfielder will hold a showcase for MLB teams on March 2 with the intent of playing in 2021, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.
The 35-year-old opted out of the 2020 season after a brief period where the New York Mets lost track of his whereabouts. Cespedes was apparently disappointed about his role on the roster and his lack of playing time.
Former Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen also said Cespedes opted out for "COVID-related reasons," Rosenthal notes.
A two-time All-Star, Cespedes signed a four-year, $110-million contract with the Mets after the 2016 season. Beset by injuries, he hit .274/.336/.516 with 28 home runs and 75 RBIs in 127 games over the life of the contract.
It remains to be seen if Cespedes will put together a new highlight-reel video package to coincide with his showcase similar to the one he released prior to signing with the Oakland Athletics as an amateur free agent in 2012.
