Sandy Alderson will become president of the New York Mets and oversee all baseball operations if Steve Cohen is approved as the team's next owner, Cohen wrote in a statement the New York Post's Joel Sherman obtained on Thursday.

"Sandy is an accomplished and respected baseball executive who shares my philosophy of building an organization and a team the right way," Cohen said. "I am excited to have Sandy in a key leadership role with the Mets if my purchase of the team is approved."

Alderson served as Mets general manager from 2010 to 2018 before taking a leave of absence due to a recurrence of cancer. He didn't return to the role, and the Mets hired Brodie Van Wagenen as his successor.

There's no indication of what will happen to Van Wagenen if Alderson takes over baseball operations, but the outlook isn't good for the former sports agent.

Cohen's purchase of the Mets for a reported $2.4-billion fee is pending approval from the league's owners. He needs 23 of the 30 owners to vote in his favor.
