The Toronto Blue Jays optioned catcher Reese McGuire, the club announced Saturday.
Catcher Caleb Joseph was selected from the taxi squad in a corresponding roster move.
McGuire came into 2020 as one half of what many considered to be a bright young catching tandem. But the 25-year-old's struggled mightily this year, going just 3-for-41 with 11 strikeouts over 19 contests. On Friday, in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park, McGuire made a critical throwing error that allowed the eventual winning run to score. He was later lifted for a pinch hitter.
Joseph, 33, has spent most of his career as a light-hitting backup with the Baltimore Orioles. He spent the majority of 2019 with the Arizona Diamondbacks' Triple-A affiliate and also got into 20 big-league games for the D-Backs.
To open a 40-man roster spot for Joseph, the Blue Jays transferred closer Ken Giles to the 45-day injured list. Giles remains eligible to be activated from the IL next week, according to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling.
