Hamels' agent already received calls from 14 teams
Cole Hamels' agent has been busy.
John Boggs, who represents the veteran left-hander, told Jayson Stark of The Athletic that he has received calls from 14 teams already.
While Boggs didn't name specific teams, the Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres have previously been linked to Hamels.
The 35-year-old is coming off of another strong season with the Chicago Cubs, posting a 3.81 ERA and 4.09 FIP over 27 starts. It marked Hamels' 13th consecutive season throwing at least 140 innings, 11 of which featured a sub-4.00 ERA. He eclipsed the 200-inning plateau seven times over that span.
Hamels spent nine-and-a-half seasons with the Phillies upon joining the big leagues in 2006. If he winds up back in Philadelphia, the four-time All-Star would rejoin a club with adjusted expectations following a transformative offseason last winter. Following a disappointing 2019, however, Philadelphia fired sophomore manager Gabe Kapler and replaced him with veteran skipper Joe Girardi.
The Padres are on their way up as well, having added Manny Machado last winter to an exciting young core that includes Fernando Tatis Jr. and Chris Paddack. Like the Phillies, the Padres also fired their manager - Andy Green - and have since hired Jayce Tingler. Hamels was born in San Diego and attended Rancho Bernardo High School.
