Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz is taking matters into his own hands to find out exactly what happened when he was shot June 9 in the Dominican Republic.
Ortiz hired a firm headed by ex-Boston police commissioner Ed Davis to investigate the incident, according to ESPN.
Joe Baerlein, a spokesperson for Ortiz and principal owner of the hired firm, revealed the 10-time All-Star has not spoken to any authorities from the Dominican or United States about the shooting.
"David has been carefully monitoring the government and police investigation,'' Baerlein said. "He had no basis for a long time to challenge their theory of mistaken identity.
"However, as new facts continue to come up, it lends some optimism that there may be some other conclusions that are drawn before it's over about why David was shot.''
Ortiz spent seven weeks hospitalized in Boston and underwent multiple surgeries. Several arrests have been made as a result of the shooting. However, authorities are now calling the incident a case of mistaken identity after originally concluding that Ortiz was targeted.
