Yandy Diaz's first campaign with the Tampa Bay Rays is in jeopardy of coming to a premature end.
The Rays announced Friday that the infielder has been shut down from baseball activities for the next six-to-eight weeks after suffering an injury setback while taking ground balls, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
Tampa Bay said Wednesday that a CT scan revealed an uncommon hairline fracture of the navicular bone in Diaz's left foot. The Rays don't expect him to need surgery, but they close their regular season in approximately seven weeks.
Diaz injured himself on July 22 after fouling a ball off his foot, and he hasn't played since.
The 28-year-old has posted a .823 OPS with 14 home runs in 78 games for the Rays this season. He registered only one homer in 88 contests with the Cleveland Indians between 2017-18 before an offseason trade brought him to Tampa Bay.
