The New York Yankees were quiet during Wednesday's trade deadline, but that didn't bother veteran reliever Zack Britton.
"I've played against the Yankees my whole career," Britton said Wednesday, according to Scott Thompson of SNY. "This is by far the best team I've seen them put together since I've been in the big leagues. So I think we got a really good shot with the guys in-house. Obviously, we gotta play better than we have over the last few weeks. But if we do and guys pitch and hit to their potential, play defense to their potential, we're better than every team."
The Yankees entered play Thursday with the best winning percentage in the American League, slightly ahead of the Houston Astros. However, New York finished July with a 14-11 record and a rapidly growing injured list.
The Astros made a big splash Wednesday, acquiring former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke from the Arizona Diamondbacks amid a few smaller moves. That doesn't faze phase Britton either.
"I remember being in Baltimore playing the Detroit Tigers - ALDS. We had to face (Max) Scherzer, (Justin) Verlander, and David Price. Three consecutive Cy Young winners and we swept 'em," Britton said, referring to the Orioles' 2014 playoff run. "So we can do it anywhere. We're capable of that. This is a lot better team."
Veteran catcher Austin Romine is similarly optimistic about the Yankees' chances in the postseason.
"You know what, let's go do it with the boys in our clubhouse right now," Romine said. "I'm all for it. Let's go do it."
