Philadelphia Phillies reliever Hector Neris has been suspended three games for intentionally hitting Los Angeles Dodgers infielder David Freese in the ninth inning of Tuesday's game, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday.

Neris was also fined an undisclosed amount for his actions.

Neris is appealing the suspension, meaning he'll be available to pitch for the Phillies on Wednesday, according to Meghan Montemurro of The Athletic.

After giving up a pinch-hit three-run homer to Matt Beaty in the ninth inning on Tuesday, Neris sailed a 95-mph fastball behind Freese that struck him in the upper back as he ducked down. Home plate umpire Chris Conroy ejected Neris and Phillies manager Gabe Kapler.

Freese was OK, but he appeared visibly upset while walking to first base, as did those in the Dodgers' dugout.

The Phillies went on to win Tuesday's game in the bottom of the ninth.

Neris, the Phillies' closer, has struggled mightily in the second half, posting a 16.88 ERA and 2.25 WHIP with no saves in 2 2/3 innings since the All-Star break.
