David Ortiz is progressing in his recovery after being shot in the Dominican Republic earlier in June.

Ortiz's wife, Tiffany Ortiz, disclosed Tuesday in a statement released by the Boston Red Sox that the baseball legend's condition is improving.

"This morning, David's condition was upgraded to 'good' by his doctors and he continues to make progress with his recovery in the intensive care unit at Massachusetts General Hospital," read the statement. "We remain grateful to everyone who has helped David through this ordeal, both in the Dominican Republic and here in Boston.

"David's journey to good health has been bolstered by the many expressions of love that have come to us from across the globe. Your support has lifted his spirits tremendously during this challenging time."

Ortiz, 43, has undergone multiple surgeries after being injured June 9 in what Dominican police are calling a targeted shooting.

The incident has resulted in several arrests, and Dominican authorities revealed Monday the identity of the person they believe paid hitmen to kill Ortiz. Police have said the attempted killers took a payment of 400,000 Dominican pesos, or around $7,800.
