The Toronto Blue Jays called up highly touted prospect Cavan Biggio on Friday, the team announced.

Skipper Charlie Montoyo said Biggio will start Friday's game against the San Diego Padres at second base, according to Jim Bowden of MLB Network Radio.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and lefty Thomas Pannone are returning to the big-league squad as well.

In corresponding moves, outfielder Billy McKinney and infielder Richard Urena were sent to the minors, knuckleballer Ryan Feierabend was designated for assignment, reliever Elvis Luciano was placed on the bereavement list, and reliever Zac Rosscup was added to the major-league roster.

Biggio, son of Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, is hitting .306/.440/.507 with six home runs and 26 RBIs in 41 games for Triple-A Buffalo. He's defensively versatile, possessing the ability to play first, second, third, and the corner-outfield spots.

The elder Biggio will head to Toronto for his son's debut, according to Brian McTaggart of

"I can't just tell you how exciting it is for our family and for him," Craig said. "He put the time and effort and the work into it and now to be able to be a big-leaguer, it's incredible. We're excited."

MLB Pipeline ranked the 24-year-old as Toronto's No. 9 prospect. The Blue Jays selected him in the fifth round of the 2016 draft.

With Cavan joining Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the Blue Jays, it will mark the first time that two sons of Hall of Famers are MLB teammates, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Gurriel, who began the season with the Blue Jays, was optioned to Triple-A in mid-April after struggling to a .175/.250/.275 slash line in 13 games.

The 25-year-old Cuban, who has only played the infield during his time in the majors, has recently been taking reps in the outfield.
