Report: Yankees never made formal offer to Machado
The New York Yankees may have been interested in signing Manny Machado, but apparently not enough to make him an offer.
Hours after Machado reportedly agreed to a $300-million deal with the San Diego Padres, a source told James Wagner of the New York Times that the Yankees never made a formal offer to the All-Star infielder.
Machado apparently wanted to top Giancarlo Stanton's 13-year, $325-million deal, but the Yankees didn't want to offer something that large, Wagner added.
The Yankees were linked to the 26-year-old Machado for most of the offseason, even hosting him at Yankee Stadium during his free-agent tour in December.
But instead of signing Machado, Brian Cashman and Co. extended Luis Severino for $40 million, re-signed CC Sabathia, Brett Gardner, and Zack Britton for a combined $54.5 million, invested just over $51 million combined in Adam Ottavino, DJ LeMahieu, and Troy Tulowitzki, and traded for pitcher James Paxton and his $8.5-million salary.
With all of the additions, the Yankees' 2019 payroll is currently the third highest in MLB at $197,860,357, according to Spotrac.
