Report: Machado's wife could steer him to Yankees
Where Manny Machado signs could ultimately come down to his wife.
Yainee Machado has a strong influence on her husband's decision and is enamored with New York City, according to a source of Wallace Matthews of New York Daily News.
The Yankees recently signed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and have third baseman Miguel Andujar on the roster but are still in pursuit of Machado. It's possible, though, that his reported price tag of $220 million to $270 million could keep New York out of the race if it ends up in the upper half of that range, Matthews adds.
Machado appears to be deciding between the Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, and Chicago White Sox after meeting with each of the three teams in December.
The 26-year-old reportedly prefers to play for New York, but the White Sox seem to have made him an offer and recently traded for Yainee's brother, Yonder Alonso. They also reportedly signed Machado's close friend Jon Jay on Monday.
In the end, money could wind up being the deciding factor in where Machado signs, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. This bodes well for the Phillies, who are prepared to spend and have already committed $73 million to Andrew McCutchen and David Robertson during the offseason.
Machado is coming off an All-Star campaign where he hit .297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs and 107 RBIs in 162 games.
