Report: Braves among teams interested in Tigers' Castellanos
As the Detroit Tigers continue to rebuild, their best offensive player from 2018 has begun to draw trade interest.
The Atlanta Braves are among the teams that have checked in with the Tigers about the availability of outfielder Nicholas Castellanos, sources told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
No deals for Castellanos are close, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck, who writes the Tigers could have a better chance of dealing him once free agents start to sign elsewhere.
Nick Markakis, Atlanta's right fielder since 2015, is a free agent.
Aside from a report that claimed the Houston Astros tried to land him before last July's trade deadline, this is the first time Castellanos' name has surfaced in trade rumors.
The 26-year-old has produced three consecutive strong seasons and could be an affordable, short-term option compared to the outfielders available in free agency. He's projected to earn $11.3 million through arbitration.
YEAR | PA | HR | RBI | OPS | WAR |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
2016 | 447 | 18 | 58 | .827 | 2.4 |
2017 | 665 | 26 | 101 | .811 | 1.6 |
2018 | 678 | 23 | 89 | .854 | 3.0 |
Castellanos is eligible for free agency at the end of 2019.
