Report: Astros tried to land Tigers' Castellanos at trade deadline
The Houston Astros reportedly made an offer to acquire Detroit Tigers outfielder Nicholas Castellanos ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, according to Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press.
The Astros were apparently looking to add an impact bat to bolster their lineup, as they also tried to pry outfielder Bryce Harper from the Washington Nationals in a deadline deal.
Castellanos, 26, would have provided the Astros with some extra right-handed pop down the stretch and into the postseason. In 157 games during the 2018 season, Castellanos hit .298/.354/.500 with 23 home runs and 89 RBIs.
A former third baseman - he became a full-time outfielder in 2018 - Castellanos could be considered one of the Tigers' primary assets during their rebuild, and Fenech suggested the possibility of a trade last week.
Castellanos, a first-round pick in 2010, is entering his final year of arbitration eligibility, and will hit free agency following the 2019 season barring a contract extension.
