Report: Mets exploring free-agent starters to replace Syndergaard if traded

The New York Mets continue to discuss trade opportunities for Noah Syndergaard, and their front office is doing its homework on free-agent pitchers to potentially replace him, sources told Andy Martino of SNY.

Martino suggests pitchers such as Patrick Corbin, J.A. Happ, Dallas Keuchel, or Nathan Eovaldi could be options to replace Syndergaard should he be traded.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has been in touch with the agents for many available starters, according to Martino.

After rumors circulated last week about the San Diego Padres' interest in the 26-year-old Syndergaard, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said an acceptable offer for the star pitcher "would have to be pretty lopsided."

Because of his ability, team-friendly contract (projected to make $5.9 million in 2019 through arbitration), and club control (not eligible for free agency until 2022), Syndergaard is a valuable commodity.

Since debuting with the Mets in 2015, Syndergaard has shown an ability to dominate opposing hitters, posting a 2.93 ERA with 573 strikeouts in 518 1/3 innings, but he has struggled with injuries, making just 32 starts since the beginning of 2017.
