The New York Mets appear to have selected their preferred replacement for Sandy Alderson.

The Mets expect to negotiate an offer for CAA agent Brodie Van Wagenen to become the team's general manager, sources told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo.

Van Wagenen is expected to accept the job, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, though it won't be finalized immediately. Meanwhile, DiComo reports that it's not a done deal, but the final answer should come next week.

New York's list of candidates reportedly shortened to two on Thursday, leaving just Van Wagenen and Tampa Bay Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom in the running after the organization informed Doug Melvin he was no longer being considered.

Van Wagenen, 44, represents Mets players Jacob deGrom and Yoenis Cespedes, as well as other notable big leaguers including Ryan Zimmerman and Robinson Cano.

Alderson took a leave of absence in June, announcing that his cancer had returned and he likely wouldn't come back to the job. Assistant general manager John Ricco and special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya took over leadership of the Mets' baseball operations department, though COO Jeff Wilpon ruled out all three as full-time GM candidates.
