The Washington Nationals are reportedly discussing a deal to sign free-agent reliever Greg Holland, who was recently released by the St. Louis Cardinals, according to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post.
With Ryan Madson and Kelvin Herrera currently set as Washington's primary late-inning options while Sean Doolittle remains on the disabled list, Holland would likely serve as a depth piece in relief. If a deal is finalized, Janes notes the Nationals would potentially refrain from deploying the three-time All-Star in high-leverage situations at first.
The Cardinals designated Holland for assignment in late July after he pitched to a 7.92 ERA and 2.24 WHIP in 32 appearances (25 innings) this season. He had signed a one-year, $14-million deal with the club in March.
The 32-year-old posted a 3.61 ERA and recorded 41 saves in 2017 with the Colorado Rockies. He missed the entire 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery the year prior.
