The St. Louis Cardinals designated reliever Greg Holland for assignment Friday, roughly four months after both parties agreed to a $14-million deal for the 2018 season.
The right-hander authored a 7.92 ERA and 4.56 FIP over 25 innings this year, walking and striking out batters at an identical clip (16.7 percent).
Holland was an All-Star in 2013, 2014, and 2017. He posted a 3.61 ERA and 1.15 WHIP while converting 41 saves with the Colorado Rockies last season.
In his place, the Cardinals promoted pitching prospect Dakota Hudson.
Hudson, 23, is the Cardinals' No. 4 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. The former first-round pick has spent the entirety of the 2018 campaign with Triple-A Memphis, with which he owns a 2.50 ERA and 3.57 FIP.
