Blue Jays in no rush to call up top prospect Vlad Guerrero Jr.
Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins says the organization won't risk halting the development of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. by rushing him to the majors.
"That's just offense, right, when you say statistically," Atkins said of Guerrero's blistering start in Double-A, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi. "There are so many more aspects of the game. And it's only a month of performance above A-ball, as well. Look, man, we're elated that he's having this type of performance and it doesn't look like this performance is going away, the way he's doing it. ...
"Right now, we're entirely focused on Vladdy as the best possible third baseman he could be, the best possible baserunner, of course, offensive player, and teammate. And right now, we currently have a very good third baseman on our major-league team."
Guerrero, a consensus top-three prospect across baseball, is attracting the attention of pundits, with some believing the time is right for Toronto to call up the 19-year-old, who enters Friday hitting .388/.452/.624 (1.075 OPS) and 199 wRC+ across 22 games.
It seems he doesn't have much else to prove, but unless the Blue Jays part ways with designated hitter Kendrys Morales or Josh Donaldson (a free agent at season's end) suffers a significant injury, Guerrero doesn't appear to have a clear path to consistent major-league at-bats.
Regardless of the front office's feelings on the matter, if Guerrero keeps hitting well, the decision to keep him in the minors will only become a more pressing issue. Guerrero, born and raised in Canada, signed with the Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2015. He's hit .314/.408/.489 (.897 OPS) across 203 games at the minor-league level.
