Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred is proud of the work being done to try to eliminate players' use of performance-enhancing drugs, despite a wave of recent suspensions that proved some are still trying to cheat the system.
"I do not see it as a program failure that we have positive tests," Manfred said, according to Stephen Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "I doubt we will ever get to the point where any sport can say with 100 percent certainty no athlete is using a performance-enhancing drug."
Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star outfielder Starling Marte was the league's most recent high-profile player to be suspended. He was handed an 80-game ban last week, while Jonathan Aro, Jose Dominguez, L.J. Hoes, and Steve Delabar have also received suspensions this year.
Marte was the fourth All-Star suspended for using PEDs since 2015, joining Dee Gordon, Marlon Byrd, and Ervin Santana, and the 19th all time.
