The Oakland Athletics are honoring and promoting their Man of Steal.
The baseball field at Oakland Coliseum is going to be named "Rickey Henderson Field" this coming season, the club announced Monday. Henderson is also expected to serve as a special assistant to team president David Kaval.
"Rickey Henderson is the greatest Athletic of all time. It is fitting we honor and recognize his impact on our franchise by naming our playing field after him," Kaval said, according to David Adler from MLB.com. "In addition to his current role on our baseball development staff, I am also excited he will be joining us in the front office to serve as a representative of Green and Gold baseball."
The Athletics are expected to dedicate the field to Henderson during their first regular-season home game on April 3. The franchise icon will also be honored in a July 15 game with a celebration called "Rickey Henderson Day" where fans will receive an Athletics jersey with his name and No. 24 on the back.
"This is an incredible honor and I am humbled that the field I have so many incredible memories on his now named after me," Henderson added. "I love this organization and our fans and look forward to contributing to our success for many years to come."
Henderson is one of the best players in Athletics history and still holds MLB's all-time record in stolen bases and runs scored.
