Orioles get Lobstein in trade with Pirates

The Baltimore Orioles added some pitching depth Wednesday, hours before the waiver deadline, acquiring left-hander Kyle Lobstein from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor-league southpaw Zach Phillips.

Lobstein, 27, appeared exclusively out of the bullpen this season for the Pirates, who designated him for assignment Tuesday after he pitched to a 3.96 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 25 innings. He's earning the league minimum this year, and won't be arbitration eligible until 2018.

Drafted by the Rays in 2008, the former second-round pick was used mostly as a starter during his first two seasons in the league with Detroit. In 20 games, including 17 starts, Lobstein compiled a 4-10 record and 5.33 ERA for the Tigers.

Phillips, meanwhile, returns to the team he began his career with in 2011. The former Rangers draft pick spent two seasons in Baltimore, where he made just 16 appearances and produced a 3.21 ERA and 8.4 K/9 rate across 14 innings.

Phillips' last MLB appearance came in 2013 with the Marlins, and he's been in the minors ever since. In 49 appearances for the Pirates' Triple-A affiliate this season, the 29-year-old had a 4.45 ERA and 15 games finished.
