Watch: Ugly Triple-A brawl nearly spills into dugout
This brawl turned real ugly real fast.
Fight night at AutoZone Park erupted Monday night during a Pacific Coast League clash between the Memphis Redbirds and New Orleans Zephyrs. It all happened in the fifth inning after Zephyrs starter Jose Urena hit Jeremy Hazelbaker with a pitch near his head. Hazelbaker wasted no time charging Urena, who met him in front of the mound and threw the first punch before being tackled by the outfielder as the benches and bullpens cleared.
Hazelbaker had to be restrained while trying to push through the pile of brawling players as he presumably tried to find Urena again. A random punch then hit Redbirds player Jose Martinez and ignited a second round that almost sent the whole scrum down the dugout steps, which conjured up memories of the famous Armando Benitez punch-up at Yankee Stadium.
Hazelbaker, Urena, and Martinez were among the six ejections between the two teams.
The Redbirds eventually won the game 4-3 with no further shenanigans.
