Ramos' Champions League ban extended 1 match for deliberate booking
Sergio Ramos won't be available for Real Madrid's first leg in the Champions League quarterfinals - provided they get there.
The defender has been suspended an additional match for receiving a yellow card on purpose in the round of 16 first leg against Ajax, UEFA announced Thursday.
Ramos was already set to miss the second leg against the Dutch giants due to yellow card accumulation.
After having been booked twice in the Champions League this season, Ramos risked an automatic suspension upon receiving a third yellow card. He was cautioned in the 89th minute against Ajax for what looked to be an innocuous foul on Kasper Dolberg, though the center-back appeared to confirm during a post-match interview that he was hoping to be booked.
"The truth is that given the result I'd be lying if I said it wasn't something I had in mind," Ramos said. "It is not to underestimate the opponent but sometimes there is a time to make decisions and I have done so."
He later took to Twitter to deny that he hoped to force a deliberate booking in the first leg, though to no avail.
If Los Blancos fail to progress to the quarterfinals, Ramos' remaining one-match ban will carry over to his next game in European competition. Real Madrid lead the tie 2-1 on aggregate, with the return fixture set to take place at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday.
