Atletico's Baston breaks wrist in freak training incident

Atletico Madrid forward Borja Baston broke his wrist in a bizarre training-ground incident on Thursday and underwent a successful operation that saw the 23-year-old have a metal plate and screws inserted in his left arm.

Borja shattered the ulna in his left arm when a strength-building elastic snapped, firing a dislodged piece that struck the local lad on the wrist. Tests confirmed that the player suffered an oblique fracture of the distal third bone of the left ulna, according to a statement on Atletico's website.

Tough break for the Atletico youth product who has still just made one top-flight appearance for the club he joined as a five-year-old. Loan moves to Murcia, Huesca, Deportivo, Real Zaragoza, and Eibar preceded a move back to the capital club in the summer.

Plans were for Borja to play a role in Diego Simeone's first-team plans for the year after he was named La Liga Player of the Month for October while at Eibar last season.

Borja addressed the media from a clinic in Majadahonda and appears optimistic despite the gruesome injury stemming from a brush with wristy business.

"I want to thank everyone for the support and affection I have received. The surgery went well and now I only think of recovering to return to work with the rest of my teammates as soon as possible."
