Gauff will miss Olympics after testing positive for COVID-19

Rising American star Coco Gauff won't compete at the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo after testing positive for COVID-19, she announced on social media Sunday.

Gauff is the fourth-highest American female and 25th-ranked player overall in the WTA's singles rankings. The teenage phenom is also the youngest player on the women's circuit ranked in the top 25.

The 17-year-old is off to a 31-12 start halfway through the 2021 season. Gauff won her second career WTA title at the Emilia-Romagna Open last May and reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at Roland Garros in June.

"We were saddened to learn that Coco Gauff has tested positive for COVID-19 and will therefore be unable to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games," the USTA said in a statement. "The entire USA Tennis Olympic contingent is heartbroken for Coco."
