Shapovalov drops 5-setter, Fernandez keeps rolling at French Open
Canadian Denis Shapovalov lost a five-hour, second-round match against 101st-ranked Roberto Carballes Baena at the French Open on Thursday, falling 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 3-6, 8-6.
But on the women's side, Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec, joined compatriot Eugenie Bouchard in the third round with a gutty 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over world No. 47 Polona Hercog.
Fernandez will face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the third round.
Shapovalov, who made the quarterfinals of the US Open last month, squandered two match points in the fifth set before Baena converted his own.
The 21-year-old had never lost before the third round of the French Open.
Fernandez, 18, upset No. 31 seed Magda Linette in her main-draw debut on Monday. She won the girls' tournament in the clay-court Grand Slam last year and took her first-round match at the US Open before losing to Sofia Kenin.
