Canada's Andreescu withdraws from French Open
Bianca Andreescu has pulled out of this year's French Open, the 20-year-old's agent told the Canadian Press on Saturday.
Andreescu, who became Canada's first-ever Grand Slam champion when she won the 2019 US Open, withdrew from the 2020 installment, citing an interrupted recovery from a knee injury due to the global pandemic.
Andreescu, ranked No. 7 in the world, hasn't competed in a WTA tour event since last October at the WTA Finals in China because of the knee concern.
The French Open at Roland Garros in Paris was pushed back four months due to the coronavirus and will start Sept. 21.
Australia's Ashleigh Barty is the defending women's champion at the tournament but declined to participate in this year's clay-court event because of the ongoing pandemic.
Leylah Fernandez and Eugenie Bouchard will represent Canada in the women's draw at the French Open, while Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Milos Raonic, and Vasek Pospisil will compete on the men's side.
