Greece's chances of advancing past the group stage took a major hit just before the 40-minute mark of their game against Japan after midfielder Kostas Katsouranis picked up his second yellow card and was sent off after an unnecessary foul on Makoto Hasebe.
The red card appears to have inspired some of the Greek players after their best effort on goal came just one minute after Katsouranis' dismissal when defender Vasileios Torosidis thumped a thunderous shot, forcing keeper Eiji Kawashima to push the ball away from goal.
Greek forward Konstantinos Mitroglou was forced to leave the match in the 35th minute after picking up an apparent hip injury.
