The WNBA suspended Toronto Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello one game without pay for an "inappropriate comment" made in reference to Angel Reese during Friday's loss to the Atlanta Dream, the league announced Saturday.

Brondello will serve her suspension Monday when Toronto takes on the Las Vegas Aces.

"The WNBA expects all coaches and team personnel to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and respect that are fundamental to our league," the league said in a statement.

Brondello appeared to refer to Reese as a "protected species" following a late-game sequence in which the three-time All-Star collided with Tempo forward Nyara Sabally.

Sabally was assessed a foul on the play and subsequently exited with an injury. Brondello immediately came to her player's defense and made the comment as she voiced her frustration with the officials.

Reese called out Brondello on social media following the contest.

The former Coach of the Year apologized to Reese on social media Saturday.

The Tempo and Dream meet once more this season in Atlanta on Aug. 10.
