Women's college basketball continues to thrive following Caitlin Clark's departure to the WNBA.

Numerous players have stepped into the spotlight and are set to showcase their talents on the sport's biggest stage.

Here are 10 names to watch when the women's NCAA Tournament begins Friday.

JuJu Watkins, USC

Watkins will be the face of the sport beyond this season. The Trojans phenom has tallied more points than Clark did through her first two campaigns and is just four 30-point games away from tying Cheryl Miller's program record of 25. Watkins is a nightmare in transition with her size, speed, and strength. She can pull up on a dime from anywhere on the floor and makes the right pass when defenses swarm her in the paint. The Los Angeles native is also a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award, showing great help instincts and often getting a hand in passing lanes.

Paige Bueckers, UConn

Bueckers is the presumptive No. 1 pick in this year's WNBA draft. The Huskies star was the first freshman to sweep the National Player of the Year awards and has recaptured that form after missing the entire 2022-23 campaign with a torn ACL. Bueckers is an efficient three-level scorer with near 50/40/90 shooting splits this season. She's an unselfish player who's always looking to create high-percentage looks for her teammates. Her 3.9 assist-to-turnover ratio leads all players. Bueckers' defense has steadily improved as she uses her length to contest shots and create turnovers.

Hannah Hidalgo, Notre Dame

Hidalgo may be small in stature, but the 5-foot-6 sophomore guard is Notre Dame's spark plug on both ends of the floor. She ignites the Fighting Irish's transition attack with her speed, plays relentless defense, and isn't afraid to take big shots. Hidalgo ranks fourth in the nation in both scoring (24.2 points per contest) and steals (3.7). She's shooting the ball significantly better from downtown too, making 40.7% of her 3-point attempts.

Lauren Betts, UCLA

Betts was the driving force for a UCLA squad that spent most of the campaign atop the AP Poll. The 6-foot-7 center is an imposing figure in the paint as both a shot-blocker and low-post scorer. She's registered the fifth-most swats (85) and is converting 65.6% of her attempts at the rim, per Hoop Explorer. Betts' newfound playmaking adds another wrinkle to her game. She does a good job passing out of double-teams in the post and has been a weapon in dribble handoffs.

Aneesah Morrow, LSU

Morrow's strong senior year is building her draft stock. The 6-foot-1 forward is among 15 players on the national ballot for the Wooden Award and is a semifinalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year award. Morrow's a handful to cover on the glass with her never-ending motor. She's leading all players in rebounds for the second time in four campaigns and trails only Courtney Paris on the Division I all-time list in career double-doubles after picking up 27 this season.

Madison Booker, Texas

Booker followed up a standout freshman campaign with SEC Player of the Year honors. The versatile second-year wing paces Texas in scoring (16.2) and ranks second on the team in rebounds (6.6), assists (2.8), and steals (1.6). She's knocking down 13% more threes this season and boasts an elite mid-range game. Booker was the Longhorns' de facto floor general last season in Rori Harmon's absence and continues to facilitate the offense at times.

Ta'Niya Latson, Florida State

Justin Casterline / Getty Images Sport / Getty

This list wouldn't be complete without the country's leading scorer. Latson is the focal point on the NCAA's second-highest scoring unit, averaging 24.9 points on 45.1% shooting. The Miami native blows by defenders off the bounce, has the body control to convert difficult finishes at the rim, and frequently draws fouls with her forceful drives. She's raised her game on the defensive end as well, placing fifth in the ACC with 2.2 steals per contest. Florida State failed to win an NCAA Tournament game in each of Latson's first two seasons, but it's only a matter of time until the program breaks through.

Olivia Miles, Notre Dame

Miles is the other half of Notre Dame's dynamic backcourt. The 22-year-old has been stellar after missing the previous campaign with a torn ACL, tallying a career-high 16.2 points per game and a 2.15 assist-to-turnover ratio. She leads the ACC in assists (5.8) for the third time in four seasons. Miles has also improved arguably her biggest weakness, connecting on 40.9% of her attempts from deep after entering the year as a 24.6% career 3-point shooter. Miles' return allows Hidalgo to play off the ball and has solidified the Fighting Irish as national contenders.

Sarah Strong, UConn

Strong has looked like anything but a freshman. The top-ranked recruit in last year's class has immediately provided UConn with a bona fide No. 2 option alongside Bueckers. Strong can carry the ball coast to coast like a guard, pick-and-pop for three, and uses her quick hands to steal the ball from opponents. The Huskies have maximized her passing ability as well, using the 6-foot-2 forward as a playmaking hub in the high post. It's been nearly a decade since the school captured its last national championship, but Strong might be the missing piece to the puzzle.

Mikayla Blakes, Vanderbilt

Blakes is another player making headlines in her debut season. The high-scoring Vanderbilt guard already has a pair of 50-point games on her resume. Blakes' 55-point outburst against Auburn last February broke Elena Delle Donne's Division I women's freshman record of 54 set in 2010. Blakes led a highly competitive SEC in scoring during conference play, posting 26.9 points on 46.9% shooting, including a 39.8% clip from deep. Her quick shot release, pull-up jumper, movement shooting, and ability to attack downhill have made the Commodores star one of the country's most lethal scorers.

JuJu's showstopping performance

JuJu Watkins always seems to save her best performances for UCLA. The Trojans phenom averaged 30.7 points, 10.3 boards, 2.7 blocks, and 2.3 steals in three meetings against the Bruins last season. She took center stage once again in the Battle of L.A., registering 38 points, 11 boards, eight blocks, five assists, and one steal to lift USC past previously undefeated UCLA. Watkins is the first Division I player to have at least 35 points, five blocks, and five dimes in a game over the past 20 seasons. She spent less than a minute on the bench during the entire tilt.

Watkins' all-around skill set was on display from the jump. The sophomore blocked Bruins guard Kiki Rice on the second possession of the game and proceeded to knock down 6-of-7 attempts from deep in the first half. Watkins had no hesitation pulling up from distance, got some clean looks off dribble-handoffs with Kiki Iriafen, and effectively used the jab step to create a bit of space from her defender. The Trojans outscored their crosstown rivals 16-7 on the fast break, with Watkins serving as the catalyst for most of those transition opportunities. The 6-foot-2 guard has the speed and strength to go coast to coast as well as the court vision to seek out teammates on hit-ahead passes.

Watkins took over the final frame with her defense and sealed USC's first victory over a No. 1 team since 1983. She showed great timing with her digs on UCLA center Lauren Betts and helped on defense when needed. Watkins had three swats in a 1:05 span at the beginning of the fourth quarter and another pair of rejections on Betts in the final 2:31. It was the exclamation mark on arguably the finest moment of Watkins' young career and potentially a difference-maker in a tight Wooden Award race.

UConn makes statement

UConn had fallen short in each of its marquee non-conference matchups, dropping games to USC, Notre Dame, and Tennessee earlier this season. The Huskies finally got the signature win they've been seeking, blowing out South Carolina by 29 points over the weekend to end their opponents' home winning streak at 71 games. It was the Gamecocks' largest defeat at Colonial Life Arena since December 2008, according to ESPN's Alexa Philippou.

Geno Auriemma's squad put forth a clinical performance after some recent struggles under the bright lights. UConn made only 14 triples and 23.7% of its 3-point attempts in its three defeats. The Huskies nearly exceeded their three-game total against South Carolina alone, draining 13-of-28 attempts from downtown. Azzi Fudd followed up a career-high 34-point performance with six treys versus the reigning national champs, while Ashlynn Shade added three makes from deep.

Some of the Huskies' outside looks were a product of pushing the pace. Paige Bueckers constantly found Fudd and Shade leaking upcourt on multiple occasions before South Carolina could set up its stingy half-court defense. UConn had 31 fast-break points against the Gamecocks after failing to crack double digits in that department in two of their three losses. The Huskies' dominance on the glass also fueled their transition game. Freshman Sarah Strong had 12 defensive rebounds, Bueckers corralled six, and Jana El Alfy had four.

UConn executed its game plan to perfection and got the desired result in spite of a 3-of-12 outing from Bueckers. That should be a huge confidence boost for a Huskies squad that badly needed a win versus a top-tier opponent.

Texas takes control of SEC

Texas capped an incredible week with a 12-point comeback win over LSU just a few hours after it was given a No. 1 seed in the NCAA selection committee's mock bracket. The Longhorns took down South Carolina and Kentucky prior to Sunday's triumph over the Tigers, making Vic Schaefer's group the first team in 20 years to win three consecutive regular-season contests against top-10 opponents.

The Longhorns' recent run has allowed them to seize control of a highly competitive SEC. Sophomore forward Madison Booker has raised her level of play, averaging 18.3 points, 9.7 boards, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals over her past three appearances. When her shot wasn't falling against LSU, she found ways to get to the charity stripe and made a pair of key jumpers down the stretch of a tight game. Taylor Jones and Kyla Oldacre are spearheading a Longhorns interior attack that averaged 43.1 points in the paint and 18.9 second-chance points entering Sunday's play. The post tandem has recorded a combined 24.7 points and 13.3 boards per contest across the previous three games.

Texas' defense has been equally responsible for the team's success, frequently forcing miscues, protecting the rim, and allowing few threes. Fourth-year guard Rori Harmon is the heart of the Longhorns' defense, applying constant pressure and taking charges. South Carolina, Kentucky, and LSU - three of the nation's most potent offensive units - were limited to under 40% shooting in their recent matchups against the Longhorns.

Transition three

NC State back on track: NC State is looking a lot more like the team that reached the Final Four last season, with wins in 16 of its last 18 games after a 4-3 start. The Wolfpack are committing the third-fewest fouls per game (12.2), have the eighth-lowest turnover rate (16.4%), and are 15th in defensive rebounds (29.2). Aziaha James paces the team in scoring for a second consecutive year, posting a career-high 17.8 points on 46.5% shooting. She had a personal-best 36 points in a key ACC showdown against Duke. Zoe Brooks has become more comfortable in her first year as the Wolfpack's starting point guard, tallying five dimes per contest over her past 14 appearances. Saniya Rivers continues to cause havoc on the defensive end, placing seventh in the conference in blocks (32) and 19th in steals (41). NC State's showdown Sunday with Notre Dame will decide the ACC regular-season crown and affect seeding for March's conference tournament.

Tennessee will be a tough out: Don't be deceived by the Lady Vols' 6-6 SEC record. Tennessee has given some of the nation's top teams a run for their money and would be a difficult NCAA Tournament draw for any No. 1 seed. Five of its six conference losses have come against top-10 teams, with four of those matchups decided by five points or less. Kim Caldwell's squad finally got a significant resume-building win earlier this month when it upset UConn for its first victory in the storied rivalry since 2007. Tennessee can certainly do some damage in March. The Lady Vols have the country's second-highest scoring unit, led by top-20 Wooden Award candidate Talaysia Cooper. The redshirt sophomore guard is having a breakout year on both ends of the floor, averaging 17 points and an SEC-leading 3.2 steals.

Georgia Tech rewards Fortner: The Yellow Jackets signed head coach Nell Fortner to a three-year contract extension through the 2029-30 campaign earlier in February. Georgia Tech has exceeded all expectations after being picked to finish 10th in the ACC preseason poll. The school's on pace to set a new single-season program record for wins and set to make its third NCAA Tournament appearance in six campaigns under Fortner. The former Big Ten and SEC Coach of the Year guided the Yellow Jackets to their second Sweet 16 appearance just four years ago. Another trip to the second weekend is a real possibility. Georgia Tech ranks 16th in adjusted offensive efficiency (114.9 points per 100 possessions), according to Barttorvik.com. The Yellow Jackets have a plethora of 3-point shooters and are elite at defending the three. Top-30 recruit Dani Carnegie has made an instant impact, averaging 13.5 points and knocking down the 10th-most triples (54) in the ACC.

USC star JuJu Watkins and UConn's Paige Bueckers headline The Associated Press preseason All-America women's college basketball team released Tuesday that for the first time includes three sophomores in a clear sign of the young talent in a sport coming off a record year of fan interest.

Watkins and Bueckers were unanimous choices by the 30-member national media panel that selects the AP Top 25 each week. It's the third appearance on the team for Bueckers, who also was a preseason choice in her sophomore season and last year.

The duo was joined by Hannah Hidalgo of Notre Dame, Madison Booker of Texas and Kiki Iriafen of USC. Watkins, Hidalgo and Booker are all second-year players.

“It's unbelievable. Those players excelled as freshmen and their teams won. They did it in multiple ways," USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. “It's really exciting for the game and the future of it.”

Gottlieb's stars, Watkins and Iriafen, are the first pair of teammates selected to the All-America team since 2017-18, when UConn had three of the five players chosen. Iriafen entered the transfer portal soon after Stanford Hall of Fame coach Tara VanDerveer announced her retirement in April.

“Kiki came because she wanted to play with JuJu, who recruited her because she wanted to play with Kiki,” Gottlieb said. “It's exciting to see their personalities mesh.”

Watkins and her fellow sophomores were part of the ratings and attendance boom last season for women's college basketball that was led by Iowa's Caitlin Clark and LSU's Angel Reese. NCAA Tournament attendance was the highest it's ever been and the championship game that featured Clark and Iowa against undefeated South Carolina had a record TV audience of 18.7 million, the highest for a basketball broadcast of any kind in five years.

Bueckers averaged 21.9 points and 5.2 rebounds to help UConn reach the Final Four, where the Huskies lost to Iowa in another game that drew high vioewership. UConn's star has eligibility left after sporadic injuries, but has said this will be her last year in school. She finally had a healthy season last year for the Huskies after missing most of her sophomore year.

Watkins burst onto the national scene as a freshman last year and put up eye-popping numbers. The Los Angeles native averaged 27.1 points, second only to Clark, and set the national record for a freshman with 920 points. She helped the Trojans reach the Elite Eight in their deepest NCAA Tournament run in three decades.

There are high expectations for the team, which is ranked third in the preseason poll behind No. 1 South Carolina and No. 2 UConn. Iriafen averaged 19.4 points and 11.0 rebounds for Stanford last year, including scoring a career-high 41 in the second round win over Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament.

Hidalgo, like Watkins, had a stellar freshman season. She averaged 22.6 points, 6.2 rebounds and 5.5 assists for the Fighting Irish, helping the team win the ACC Tournament and advance to the Sweet 16.

Booker stepped up her play for the Longhorns after Rori Harmon went down with an ACL injury in late December. She was thrust into the starting point guard slot and shined, averaging 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. Those numbers were even higher after Harmon's injury.

Bueckers, Watkins and Hidalgo were all first-team AP All-Americans in the spring. Booker was on the second team with Iriafen earning honorable mention.

The AP began releasing a preseason All-America team before the 1994-95 season.
